Title: Defending New Zealand: ramparts on the sea 1840-1950s : Pictorial

Author: Peter Cooke
Pub: 2002
Publisher: Defence of New Zealand Study Group

Desc.: 30cm with ill.

This book Defending New Zealand: Ramparts on the sea 1840-1950s : Pictorial contains the photos and their captions from Peter Cooke's Defending New Zealand: Ramparts on the sea 1840-1950's.

In Defending New Zealand: ramparts on the sea 1840-1950s Peter Cooke covers the breadth and depth of New Zealand looking at it's defences during the period from 1840 up to the 1950's.

While this is only the Pictorial the parent 2 volume set Defending New Zealand: ramparts on the sea 1840-1950s is full of photos, maps, plans, tables and diagrams in which Peter Cooke still managed to fit in text that describes the history of the various sites. The two volume set covered everything from pillboxes and roadblocks through to port defences and even the 9.2" coastal batteries at Whangaparoa, Waiheke Island (in Auckland) and Karori (in Wellington). Defending New Zealand: Ramparts on the sea 1840-1950s : Pictorial just contains all of the photos that were included in the two volume set and their accompanying captions.

When I first had a look at Defending New Zealand: Ramparts on the sea 1840-1950s : Pictorial, I was at work and almost needed a mop for the drool with seeing all the photos of our built military heritage in such a condensed volume. They have all been reproduced in Peter's books with such high quality.
