Landscapes of Conflict: a field guide to the New Zealand Wars is as its name suggests is about the New Zealand Wars. However rather than focusing on the campaigns this book focuses on defence and field works. Nigel Prickett has concentrated on those sites that are accessible or visible by members of the public.

He includes maps, contemporary photos, period photos and drawings and in some cases diagrams of the works. In his introduction, Nigel Prickett tells us what the New Zealand wars were and how they came about. He then goes on to look at a number of aspects including the styles of fortifications and field works, weapons.

The inclusion of contemporary aerial photos enables the reader to see the remains of earthworks that may not be apparent when one is standing on the ground.

I have chosen to review this book despite the New Zealand wars being beyond the scope of the Capital Defence Website, due to the fact it is about defence and field works.
However if you are wanting to read up on the New Zealand Wars themselves:
The New Zealand Wars by James Belich,
Pub 1986 and may still be in print.

Landscapes of Conflict: a field guide to the New Zealand Wars was at the time of writing this was readily available.
